DESCRIPTION:Schedule start time TBD (due to the Halloween Breakfast at Huntington Middle School\, we will be leaving in two groups.  The first group will begin their trip late morning and the second group will leave early afternoon). \nThis is a great trip for first time and seasoned backpackers alike.  Henninger Flats is situated above Eaton Canyon\, off Altadena Drive. The hike is approximately 3 miles distance each way and has a total elevation gain of 1\,400 feet.  The hike to Henninger Flats is on the historic Mt. Wilson Toll Road\, which originally provided an access way to haul parts up for the 100-inch telescope at Mt. Wilson Observatory back in 1917.  The trail offers spectacular views of the entire San Gabriel Valley\, Downtown Los Angeles and\, on very clear days\, Catalina Island. \nScouts will have the opportunity to earn the Nature\, Plant Science and Fish & Wildlife Merit Badges in connection with this trip.  We will work on the badges Saturday late afternoon and early evening with the help of Johann Lockard from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.  Scouts will also have the opportunity to tour the Henninger Flats Nature Center. \nNo overnight parking is allowed in Eaton Canyon but overnight parking is allowed on Altadena Drive.  Carpooling and dropping off of hikers will be necessary to minimize the number of vehicles parked overnight.   \nWe will be returning to the Eaton Canyon parking lot late Sunday Morning.

Scouts will have the opportunity to earn the Aviation Merit Badge in connection with this trip – we can work on the badge requirements when we are not gliding. DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday September 21st 7:00am \nWhere: From the I-210 Foothill Freeway in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Avenue. Drive north for 3.4 miles to the end of Lake Avenue (where it intersects with the terminus of Loma Alta Drive running east and west). Park along the street. The hike begins to the left of the stone gateway on the east side of the street.  \nWhat to Bring: Please wear lace up hiking boots\, have a backpack with your ten essentials including 2L of water and a minimum of 500 calories of carbohydrate based snacks. The morning temperatures have been in the 60’s climbing quickly to the 90’s so please dress in layers\, have a hat and plenty of sun protection. \nSummary: We will hike to the top of Echo Mountain where professor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe’s mountain railway and resort was Southern California’s must-visit attraction\, drawing more than three million visitors from1896 to 1936 once stood. Echo Mountain (3207′)\, known as The White City\,” was the heart of the resort with its elegant Echo Mountain House hotel\, chalet\, observatory\, and small zoo. It has all since vanished\, but this fascinating hike takes you to the ruins of this official historic landmark. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead.  The trip to the trailhead is about 3.5-4 hours. We should complete the hike by midday Sunday\, and be home by 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. \nMEALS:  We will provide Philmont-style dinners for Friday and Saturday evening.  Bring your own trail breakfasts for Saturday and Sunday\, and your own trail lunch for Saturday.  Further information will be provided as we get closer to the trip.  \nPlease Note:  This trip is for advanced backpackers only. DESCRIPTION:Trailhead: Corner of N Lake Ave and E Loma Alta Dr. \nTroop 355 will hike from Pasadena to the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains. The hike will take us to the top of San Gabriel Peak\, elevation 6\,161 feet\, the highest point in the front range. San Gabriel Peak with its 360 degree views and the historic\, oak-shaded Mount Lowe East Trail are popular destinations\, but we will distinguish ourselves by our approach from Pasadena rather than the Angeles Crest Highway. \nThe elevation gain of 1\,300 feet per 2.5 miles is comparable to the gain of 1\,400 feet on the 2.5 mile trail to the top of Echo Mountain. The most challenging part of this hike will be the 10 mile downhill back to the trailhead. DESCRIPTION:Troop 355 is going to sea – well sort of….We’re going to visit and stay overnight on the USS Midway aircraft carrier located in San Diego.   \nTroop 355\,  \nFor those that missed Monday night’s meeting\, our next Troop outing will be a very special event on board the aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego!  How often can you say you spent the night on a floating city at sea 3 football fields long and 20 stories tall and were able to “walk in the footsteps of 225\,000 Midway sailors who served our country and upheld the American ideals of strength\, freedom and peace” while serving in Vietnam and the First Persian Gulf War and that sailed in every ocean in the world?  The USS Midway was America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century and is now one of the most visited ship museums in the world. \nThe trip is from Saturday March 1st through Sunday March 2nd. DESCRIPTION:Troop 355 is going to sea – well sort of….We’re going to visit and stay overnight on the USS Midway aircraft carrier located in San Diego.   \nTroop 355\,  \nFor those that missed Monday night’s meeting\, our next Troop outing will be a very special event on board the aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego!  How often can you say you spent the night on a floating city at sea 3 football fields long and 20 stories tall and were able to “walk in the footsteps of 225\,000 Midway sailors who served our country and upheld the American ideals of strength\, freedom and peace” while serving in Vietnam and the First Persian Gulf War and that sailed in every ocean in the world?  The USS Midway was America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century and is now one of the most visited ship museums in the world. \nThe trip is from Saturday March 1st through Sunday March 2nd.  This one is coming up quickly so I need sign-ups asap in order to compile the attendance spreadsheet (48 signed up already Monday night!).***CHECKS MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY\, FEBRUARY 19 (THAT’S RIGHT\, NEXT WEDNESDAY!) TO ENSURE YOUR RESERVATION ON THE SHIP*** \nAttached is general information for the trip.  Boys\, please read it completely as it contains our itinerary\, gear to bring (and not bring)\, Rules and Safety Guidelines and important reminders.  There is no meal planning for this outing – we will have dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning on the ship (and clean up after ourselves!). The check-in briefing and fire drill is MANDATORY.  If you get there too late the ship will be locked down and no one will be allowed on or off the ship.  Our voyage will conclude at 9:30 AM Sunday morning\, but you are welcome to stay aboard and continue exploring the ship.   \nTransportation: You are responsible for transportation to and from the carrier.  Parking is available on the pier for a fee of $12:00.  You can also arrange for transportation by ordering tickets through Amtrak (http://www.amtrak.com/pacific-surfliner-train)\, departing from Union Station downtown L.A.(called LAX by Amtrak) and arriving in San Diego downtown (SAN – located 2 blocks from the Midway).  The website shows the cost to be $37.00 per person for adults or $55.50 for an adult and child 15 years or younger.  According to the Midway information\, DO NOT BOOK A TRAIN AFTER TRAIN #774 WHICH LEAVES UNION STATION AT 12:30 PM AND ARRIVES IN SAN DIEGO AT 3:10 PM. Any train leaving after this will get you there too late.  Also\, please note that\, unfortunately\, there is major construction happening to the Orange County portion of the train line during the first three weekends of March.  That means the train will stop in Irvine and all passengers will be transferred to buses and driven to San Diego.  I’ve spoken with Amtrak and they promise the buses will arrive in San Diego on schedule! \nPlease let me know if you have any questions (do not Reply All). SUMMARY:Anza Borrego Desert Camping Trip - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to all for the large interest in the Anza Borrego campout\, the park rangers have requested that we adjust the campout to accommodate our large group. Instead of backpacking we will car camp in an area navigable by the Troop 355 Honda Odysseys and similar vehicles. The new trip will feature the beauty of the Anza Borrego Desert\, a 2.5 hour excursion on retired Army M35 deuce and a half cargo trucks deep into the Borrego Badlands (pictured above)\, primitive camping\, and hiking. This trip also offers Friday night camping (optional)\, First Class and Cooking Merit Badge cooking opportunities\, a short hike to an ancient Native American village area\, and an early Sunday morning departure. \nWe will camp in the Blair Valley Primitive Camp adjacent to highway S-2\, 30 miles south of Borrego Springs. The cost of the new trip is $50\, entirely for the truck tour. Each patrol will plan and purchase its own food\, water and firewood. Here is the new schedule for Saturday February 8: \nGroup A9 am Badlands TourNoon Set Up Camp2 pm Easy 3 mile hike \nGroup B10 am Set Up CampNoon Badlands Tour3pm Easy 3 mile hike  \nWe will depart no later than 9 am on Sunday February 9. \nThe Anza Borrego Desert is located 150 miles and 3.5 hours from San Marino. To get there\, head south on I15\, exit at Temecula\, and follow Highway 79 through Warner Springs to Borrego Springs (directions will follow). We have 70 spots and 65 are taken so far. Please check the updated list (attached) if you already signed up to confirm your reservation. Please confirm with me that you are still planning on attending this trip given the itinerary change.  Also let me know if you did not sign-up and would like to go.  \nChecks and release forms (attached) can be dropped off at the troop meeting tonight  or dropped by house no later than this Friday\, February 3. Please select Tour A or B and indicate if you are camping on Friday night. Tour times will be assigned on a first come first served basis. Release forms will not be accepted via email. Campers bring a sack lunch (for Saturday)\, trail snacks of 400 calories (for the Saturday hike)\, 1 liter of water\, and money for a IN-N-Out lunch on the trip home. \nLastly\, since this is very short notice we will NOT be able to do our regular car camping meal planning at the Troop meeting this evening.
