SUMMARY:Introductory Backpack Trip to Cooper Canyon - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:Schedule start time TBD (assume early AM departure on Saturday and mid-afternoon return on Sunday). \nThis is a great trip for first time backpackers – and seasoned backpackers will enjoy it as well! Mr. Chase has commented in the past ‘if you can carry a duffle bag\, you can do this trip!’ \nThe hike is 2.7 miles each way on the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails. It is as flat a hike as you are going to get in the Angeles National Forest with a net loss of 250 feet in elevation on the hike to camp. \nSign-ups will occur in late September.

SUMMARY:Kern River Whitewater CampoutClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:The annual Kern River Rafting trip will be held on Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-27). We will arrive at the Sierra South rafting outfitters in Kernville early Saturday morning. We will board buses and ride up the river for a rafting run. We get back on the buses and run the river again. Then we have lunch and work on the whitewater merit badge. After that we travel up the river 30 min. to Camp Whitsett (a BSA camp in the Sequoia National Forest). We make camp and spend the afternoon working on scout skills. That evening we have a formal campfire at which we retire an American flag with an official ceremony. The next morning we go on a five mile hike and work on some more scout skills. We relax and enjoy the afternoon. A campfire that evening concludes the trip and we break camp early on Monday morning and head home. This is the first camping trip with our new scout patrols\, and a great way for them to start off with Troop 355.

SUMMARY:West Fork Backpack TripClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:TROOP 355 SPRING BACKPACK TRIPANGELES NATIONAL FORESTWEST FORK TRAIL CAMP \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 23 and Sunday\, March 24 \nWHERE: Red Box Ranger Station to the West Fork Trail Camp along the Gabrielino Trail in the Angeles National Forest. For most of the hike we will be following the west fork of the San Gabriel River. West Fork Trail Camp is located at the junction of two classic trails – the Gabrielino Trail and the Silver Moccasin Trail. \nDIFFICULTY: The hike is 5.3 miles each way. We will hike almost all downhill on Saturday – there is a total elevation loss of about 2000 feet from Red Box to West Fork. On Sunday\, we will hike back up the 2000 vertical feet to Red Box – you will definitely earn those root beers. \nCOST: $10 per person. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, March 11. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the Troop Meeting\, or mail or deliver to: \nKelly Moffat2280 Adair StreetSan Marino\, CA 91108 \nAVAILABILITY: This is an intermediate backpack trip. We will take it fairly slow\, but this will be significantly more difficult than our introductory backpack to Little Jimmy last fall. This trip is not recommended for first time backpackers – instead\, we would recommend that you join us on our introductory backpack trip next fall. If you have not backpacked with us before but would like to go on this trip\, please contact Mr. Chase or Mr. Moffat to discuss. \nMEET: At Scout House at 7:00 AM on Saturday\, March 23. We will divide Troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 45 minutes. We should arrive there by 8:30 AM. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about midday and be home by 2:00 PM. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for breakfast on Sunday. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Monday night\, March 18 by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES: \nIt might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nDr. Snaer\, Mr. Chase and Mr. Moffat are always available to discuss equipment. Contact any of them if you have any questions. \nAny cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI\, Sports Chalet). \nDirections to the Red Box Trailhead: There is a large parking lot at the trailhead. However\, it is always a good idea to carpool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 14 miles to the parking lot at Red Box Station. Turn right onto Mount Wilson/Red Box Road\, then immediately right or left into one of the two parking areas on either side of the road – the left (east) parking lot is closest to our trailhead. Hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror.

SUMMARY:Mammoth Snow Sports WeekendClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Big Picture:Troop 355 is headed to Mammoth on Friday February 8 for a weekend of skiing and riding. We will leave town right after school\, eat dinner on the way up and meet at our condo (further details on condo to come). We’ll head out for rentals and groceries after that. After a good night sleep we’ll make the 20 minute drive over to Main Lodge and check in with the Mammoth Ski Patrol for a safety lecture. Then it’s off to the slopes! Accomplished skiers and snow boarders will be able to earn the Snow Sports Merit Badge. After a day on the slopes\, it’s back to the condo and we’ll cook up some dinner and relax. On Sunday morning we’ll check out of the condo and you can hit the slopes again or head home. \nEquipment: If you don’t have your own skis / board\, you will need to make arrangements to rent. You can rent locally (i.e.\, Sports Chalet)\, rent from a local store in Mammoth when you arrive on Friday\, or from Mammoth directly. We will not have time on Saturday morning to rent equipment\, so please plan ahead. \nFood: Dinner on your own Friday night. Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday – in the condo. Lunch Saturday on the hill. Saturday dinner – either in the condo or at a restaurant. \nWhat to bring:Bring warm waterproof skiwear\, dress in layers\, gloves\, hat or helmet\, goggles or sunglasses. Plan on 20 degrees\, snowy weather and we can adjust from there. Bring a fanny pack or daypack to keep your 10 essentials in when you’re on the slopes. Scouts should also bring a sleeping bag in case you end up sleeping on the floor of the condo with your buddies. \nSupervision & Ability groups:Mammoth has a wide verity of terrain and snow conditions. Just like with the safe swim defense we will need to establish ability groups. Skiers who can manage parallel traverses\, wedge turns and hockey stops (i.e.\, intermediate level or above) will do fine with the group of skiers who will go off to earn the snow sports badge with their merit badge instructor. Skiers hoping to earn the snow sports merit badge will need to demonstrate skiing skill on advanced terrain. Skiers who have not mastered those skills will enjoy some of the less demanding runs toward the bottom of the hill. If your son is not quite ready to earn the merit badge please plan to come on the trip and supervise him on the slopes.
