SUMMARY:Moro Canyon Intermediate Backpacking
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a backpacking trip to Lower Moro Canyon in the Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach. \nWHEN: Saturday\, October 29rh and Sunday\, October 30\, 2022. \n\n\n\nMeet:  Saturday morning\, 6:30 a.m. sharp\, at the Scout House (eat a big breakfast before arriving).  We will distribute the dinners and cooking gear among the crews (I will send out the cooking crew list later this week). Drive up:  Shortly after 6:30 a.m. we will split into carpools and drive to the trailhead about an 80-90 minute drive from San Marino.  We should try to squeeze into as few cars as possible they will charge us for every car over 6 – we can leave extra cars at the Scout House parking lot.  Use 8471 North Pacific Coast Highway for your navigation (you will turn inland from PCH at the stoplight “School-State Park”)\, when you see the fork in the road\, follow the sign to the campground and bear right and then follow the signs to trailhead parking..\n\nPre-Hike Fun:  Before we hike up to the campsite\, we are going to go spend some time on the beach.  Bring sandals or water shoes as you will need them.  Also feel free to bring frisbees\, kites\, swim suits\, etc.  We can leave stuff in the cars before hiking up and there are bathrooms for changing at the trailhead.\nFood:  Everyone should bring their own trail lunch for Saturday and breakfast for Sunday\, plus any trail snacks you may need.  The troop will provide the dinner for Saturday.  You do not need to bring any cooking gear – the troop will provide backpack stoves\, propane fuel\, pots\, cooking spoons\, sponges and soap.  You just need to bring your own mess kit (just a bowl and a fork or spork\, and a cup if you will be making hot chocolate or coffee).\n\n\n\n\nGear:  We hope all our new backpackers had the chance to attend Dr. Reiling’s Intro to Backpacking meeting to learn what to pack.  The Backpacking Checklist on the troop website (http://www.bsa-troop355.org) has a full list of the gear you should bring (from the home page click on Resources then Backpacking Checklist).  In short\, you will need a backpacking tent (5 pounds or less)\, plus a backpack that fits you\, plus a sleeping bag that is rated between 15 and 30 degrees F and is about 3 pounds.  These items can be borrowed or rented from REI.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClothing:   Do not bring cotton clothing of any kind.  You want wool or synthetic hiking socks\, a tech hiking shirt\, and a fleece or other synthetic jacket\, as well as a seam-sealed rain shell or poncho.  Good hiking pants or shorts – preferably zipoffs so you can covert between pants and shorts as needed. Moisture-wicking underwear.  And boots that are broken in\, that are comfortable to walk in.  Try not to pack more clothes than you will need – for a one night trip our experienced backpackers will be bringing only the clothes they are wearing on Saturday\, plus rain gear\, a jacket and a sleep system.\n\n\n\nWeather:  The NWS forecasts highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 60s at Crystal Cove Park.  Given that we are on the coast\, there may get windy.  And while rain is not in the forecast\, in our experience it could always rain no matter what the forecast says\, so bring your rain gear and pack covers. Bring your sleep systems (long johns and beanie hat).Navigation:  We will emphasize proper navigation on this trip.  All scouts should bring a compass – it is an essential component of any scout’s gear.  We will provide the maps for this trip – our scouts will orient the maps before we start hiking\, and tell us which way to go. Water:   NOTE: This is a dry camp so you will need to bring 4 liters of water to have enough for the hike and for cooking.  \nOther Gear to remember:  Insect repellent\, sunscreen\, TP\, first aid kit\, headlamp or flashlight.  Extra Ziplock bags for packing out all our trash – don’t bring large trash bags\, bring gallon Ziplocks instead.  Check our Backpacking Checklist to make sure you bring everything else you will need.\n\n\nAdditional Questions:  We know it can be difficult to gear up for your first backpack trip\, most of us had many many questions the first time we backpacked with the troop.  So please feel free to contact the troop leaders if you have have any questions.  Our main goal for this trip is to have a safe and fun trip – and a big part of that will be helping our new backpackers become experienced backpackers.

SUMMARY:Bear Canyon Backpack Trip
DESCRIPTION:TROOP 355 INTERMEDIATE BACKPACK TRIP \nBEAR CANYON \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 26 and Sunday\, March 27\, 2022. \nWHERE: Switzers Trailhead to Bear Canyon Trail Camp in the Angeles National Forest. We will hike on the classic Gabrieleno Trail\, past Switzer Falls and down into Bear Canyon. We will then hike along the canyon floor\, following the stream up to Bear Canyon Trail Camp. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 4 miles each way. We will lose about 1000 feet of elevation hiking down into Bear Canyon\, then gain about 1100 feet hiking up the canyon to the Bear Canyon Trail Camp. This is an intermediate backpack trip\, but it is on the easy side of intermediate. \nCOST: $15 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, March 21. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 45 minutes. We should return to the trailhead Sunday morning by noon and be home by 1:00 p.m. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for Sunday’s breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Thursday night\, March 24 by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES: It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nEQUIPMENT: Please review the troop backpacking checklist on the Resources page of the troop website to make sure you have all the gear you will need. The troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment – feel free to contact any of them if you have questions about gear for the trip. If you are a new backpacker\, please consult with one of the troop leaders before the trip to make sure you are on track to have all the proper gear. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 9.9 miles (just past the Clear Creek Information Center). Turn right on the Switzer Truck Trail (where there is a small parking lot and a bathroom structure)\, and drive down the hill to the parking lot at the end of the road. The parking lot sometimes fills early\, so you may need to drive back up the hill to park. We will carpool as much as possible – fill your car with scouts and backpacks. Any cars parking at Switzers will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI\, Big Five) – don’t forget to hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. \nThe trail begins at the bridge near the far west side of the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Echo Mtn. Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike will take us up the popular Sam Merrill Trail\, located in the mountains of Pasadena/Altadena.  This hike is nothing new to 355 except for we are going to do it at night!  It adds an element of challenge and spookiness.  You absolutely must bring appropriate clothing (could be cold) and a fully charged headlamp.  2L of water should be plenty as the temp will be cooler.  We will leave the trailhead at 7:00 pm and return around 9-9:30 depending on our speed.  PLEASE BRING A CELL PHONE\, and we will call for pickup when we are halfway down.

SUMMARY:Introductory Backpack Trip to Cooper Canyon - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Troop 355 fall backpacking trip is traditionally a short and easy outing – the main goal is to introduce our new backpackers to this great activity. We feel our backpacking program is one of our troop’s great strengths\, and we hope that many of you will get to experience the challenges and rewards of backpacking with the trooop\, and eventually become part of our experienced Philmont crews. These trips are also lots of fun for our experienced backpackers; we generally offer an additional hiking option for those who want to hike a few more miles. \nWHEN: Saturday\, September 29 and Sunday\, September 30. \nWHERE: Buckhorn Campground to the Cooper Canyon Trail Camp along the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails in the Angeles National Forest. Rated as one of the best trails in the Angeles. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 2.7 miles each way on the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails. It is as flat a hike as you are going to get in the Angeles National Forest with a net loss of 250 feet in elevation on the hike to camp. This is an easy hike\, perfect for first time backpackers. If you can carry a duffle bag\, you can do this trip – although you will not be happy climbing out of Cooper Canyon if your pack is too heavy or you have not prepared at all for a hike – so be prepared! \nAVAILABILITY: This is an introductory backpack. Everyone is welcome. If you have ever had an interest in backpacking\, this is the opportunity to try it! The troop will host a backpacking seminar in late August or early September at the Scout House so our new backpackers can learn what to pack (and what not to pack) – stay tuned for details. \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, September 24. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the backpacking seminar on September 17\, or the troop meeting on September 24\, or mail to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair St. San Marino 91108. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday\, September 29. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1 ½ hours. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about noon and should be home by 2:00 PM. \nWATER: IMPORTANT: The Cooper Canyon creek currently has an extremely low water level. We believe we will be able to filter some water there\, but cannot be confident that everyone will be able to filter enough water for their Saturday needs and for hiking out on Sunday. Thus\, we are asking that all backpackers carry enough water with them on Saturday to cover their drinking water needs for the weekend. That should be about 4 liters. The 4 liters should be in your backpacks when you show up on Saturday morning\, there will not be an opportunity to fill your water containers at the trailhead. You can carry the water in a Camelbak style water bladder\, Nalgenes\, platypus bottles\, or just simple plastic drinking water bottles. At camp\, the troop leaders and senior scouts will filter water to provide the necessary cooking water for the crews. Plus they will filter extra drinking water for anyone who may run out. \nHOW YOU CAN HELP WITH THE WATER SITUATION: Everyone should start hydrating by THURSDAY NIGHT. Drink plenty of water before going to bed\, and keep drinking water all day Friday and Friday night. Hydrating your body now will greatly decrease the chance of dehydration on Saturday or Sunday. If you drink a lot of water when you hike\, you may want to bring 5 liters. Senior scouts and experienced backpackers\, if you are OK to hike in with a heavier pack\, bring extra water – you can help out others who may need it. Also\, our experienced backpackers should bring their filters to help out with the filtering process. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, fruit or nuts breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Friday\, September 28 by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES:It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. Our troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment. Please contact them if you have any questions.Any cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI) or at the gas station just south of the Angeles Crest exit from the 210. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Parking is limited at the trailhead so please car pool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to Highway 2 north (Angeles Crest Hwy.). Drive approximately 34.7 miles to the Buckhorn Campground sign and take a sharp left into the campground. This can be a tricky turn to see\, so watch for the following landmarks as you get close – large Cloudburst Summit sign at 33.4 miles\, Buckhorn Day Use Area sign at 34.5 miles (do not turn here)\, then a sign saying Buckhorn CG Entrance 500 feet. After you turn left into the campground\, drive 0.4 miles and veer right at the junction. After 0.1 more miles there will be a sign pointing left that says Day Use Trail Area. Follow that to the left and you will see a sign saying Burkhart Trail. Follow the Burkhart Trail signs until the road ends at the trailhead parking lot. Hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. Depending on the number of cars in the parking lot\, we may need to park some cars outside of the Campground along the Angeles Crest Hwy.
