SUMMARY:Cycling Merit Badge Session
DESCRIPTION:10 mile training ride to the Rose Bowl. \n2011 Cycling Merit Badge Information \nTo: BSA Troop 355 Cycling Merit Badge Candidates \nThe Cycling Merit Badge involves dedication to a systematic\, physically demanding\, and time consuming regimen with an ultimate goal of completing a 50-mile ride. While this badge will require more time and physical output\, many who have completed it claim it is their most cherished badge for exactly that reason – it was tough to get. Listed below are some of the requirements and event timing so that you can plan accordingly. It would be a good idea for candidates to do a couple of 5-mile rides around their neighborhood on their own to get ready for our first formal ride which will be a 10-miler. Please BE PREPARED for the following: \nBlue CardsI need for each candidate to furnish me with a filled out “Blue Card” so that I can sign off on the requirements as you complete them. This is an essential part (as it is for all merit badges) of the record-keeping process and must be done in order for you to receive your badge. Please get them to me no later than November 1. \nSolvang Prelude ApplicationsThe normal registration fee is $50 per rider\, but I was able to get a $10 discount per rider\, so your cost will be $40. The bad news is that we need to commit and get our applications in by early October. I will provide copies of the application (can also download from www.bikescor.com) at the next ride. I will need your completed application and check by October 4\, so that I can submit all the applications for our troop as a group on October 5. \nWritten TestA written test will be taken sometime before the Solvang Prelude ride. It will consist of about 50 short answer questions (most from the merit badge book) and should be relatively easy if you have read/studied your merit badge book and know your Boy Scout First Aid. You must get at least 80% correct to pass. \nSchedule of Events: \nSunday\, September 18	5-Mile Ride (San Marino)	Meet @ Scout House 7:30am \nSunday\, October 2 10-Mile Ride (Rose Bowl)	Meet @ Scout House 7:30am \nTBD	Bike Mechanics Workshop	Meet @ 7:00 PM Pasadena Cyclery 7:00pm 1670 E. Walnut Pasadena\, CA. 626-795-2866 \nSunday\, October 9 15-Mile Ride (Linda Vista)	Meet @ Scout House 7:00am \nSunday\, October 16 25-Mile Ride (Descanso Grd) Meet @ Scout House 7:00am \nSunday\, October 23 25-Mile Ride (Sacred Heart)	Meet @ Scout House 7:00am \nSunday\, October 30 32-mile Ride (Seal Beach)	Meet @ Scout House 7:00am \nSaturday\, November 5	Solvang Prelude 50-mile Ride \nTo Be Arranged by appt.	Any make-up requirements \nEagle RequirementThis badge is an eagle requirement if you have not already earned the Hiking or Swimming merit badge. Among other things it requires a minimum of 200 miles of cycling. You will do a few more miles and ride more challenging routes in my program\, not because I like to torture you\, but because I want you to be in shape to complete the 50-milers comfortably and without incident. \nCycling Merit Badge Counselor \nJohn Osgood

SUMMARY:Cycling Merit BadgeMechanic ClinicClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:For those of you seeking the Cycling Merit Badge\, I have arranged a bicycle mechanic clinic at Pasadena Cyclery (1670 E. Walnut\, Pasadena\, CA) on Tuesday\, November 1 at 7:00 pm. It will last about an hour to an hour and a half. Your will learn how to properly adjust and lubricate your bike\, fix flat tires\, and do basic routine maintenance. This is a requirement for the badge so I expect all candidates to attend. While the shop will be closed to the public\, it will be open for us if you need to purchase any last minute supplies for the Solvang ride. The owner is a Scoutmaster for another troop so he gives all boy scouts discounts on their purchases.

SUMMARY:Albert Jagels Eagle Project -Click for details
DESCRIPTION:Dear Scouts of Troop 355 \nI am planning to finish up my Eagle project this week. My Eagle project is the planting of a rose garden in front of a newly installed bas-relief (something similar to a frieze) on the south side of St. Philip’s Church in Pasadena on 151 S. Hill (across from the PCC tennis courts). The first part of my project went very smoothly and now it is time to finish the job. The final phase will be the planting of roses in the garden area (in addition to some other plants.) This will take place on Tuesday from 1-6 pm (I have some private school friends helping me on that day and I know that it will be hard for San Marino kids and am sorry for the short notice)\, Wednesday from 1-6\, and Thursday from 4 to 7. I will provide Donuts and drinks to all volunteers. Please wear sunscreen and cool clothes. Thank you for reading my letter. Sincerely\, \nAlbert Jagels(626) 441-1404

SUMMARY:Sahil Shah's Eagle Project -Click for details
DESCRIPTION:Hello everyone\, \nI hope you guys are having an awesome Summer! I sent a preliminary email earlier and here is the follow-up on my Eagle Project. \nLocation: DayOne in Pasadena (on Euclid Ave. between Walnut St. and Ramona St. – right next to the Pasadena City Hall) \nWhat is DayOne and what do they do? DayOne is an organization that assists and helps to foster youth in the community. It provides support services\, tutoring and classes\, and much more through youth groups. It is a very important organization in the Pasadena area and my school (Polytechnic) is affiliated with it through tutoring. Here is their website: http://www.dayonepasadena.com/ \nWhen: Weekend of August 20th Saturday: 9AM – 4PM Sunday: 9AM – 4PM \nWhat we will be doing: Currently the facilities at DayOne are in need of dire renovation. We are going to be helping to repair a ramp that leads up the entrance of the trailer. The wood is decomposing and causing holes to form in the ramp\, rendering it unusable. We will remove the plywood boards that are falling apart\, install new ones\, reinstall the railing that has been coming off\, and finally\, painting everything. \nWhat to bring: Sturdy\, close-toed shoes and clothes that you are not afraid to get dirty. If you have leather gloves and any kind of eye protection\, please bring those also. \nAs is custom\, I will be providing donuts in the morning\, lunch\, as well as snacks and liquids throughout the day. Feel free to email me with any questions\, concerns\, or comments. \nThanks and please mark your calenders and inform your scouts. \n~Sahil Shah626-400-8762
