SUMMARY:Mt. Pacifico Advanced Backpack Trip and Philmont ShakedownClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30\, 2019 \nWHERE: Sulphur Springs/Pinyon Flats to the peak of Mt. Pacifico in the Angeles National Forest. We will hike mostly on the classic Pacific Crest Trail\, then hike cross country up the summit ridge to the peak. The Mt. Pacifico Trail Camp is right on the summit. In 2018 we hiked to Mt. Pacifico from the Angeles Forest Highway and Mill Creek\, and hiked east on the PCT. This year we will access Mt. Pacifico from the Angeles Crest Highway\, and hike west on the PCT. \nDIFFICULTY/AVAILABILITY: This hike is about 6 miles each way\, with an elevation gain of about 2200 feet. There is no water at camp. The dry camp factor will push the trip from a high intermediate to an advanced trip. This trip is primarily intended as a shakedown for our 2019 Philmont crews. Other advanced Troop 355 backpackers are also invited to attend. If you have not completed multiple backpack trips with Troop 355\, we would ask that you wait until our fall backpack trip and join us on that one. \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, June 24. You can drop off or mail a check made out to BSA Troop 355 to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair Street\, San Marino\, CA 91108. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday\, June 29. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1.5 hours. We should return to the trailhead Sunday morning by noon. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for Sunday’s breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced prior to the trip by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES: Mt. Pacifico is at 7100 feet\, so it might be cold at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nWATER: Again\, this is a dry camp. Everyone will need to pack in all the water he will need for the whole trip\, including a portion of the cooking water. We recommend that everyone pack in at least 7 liters of water (2 for the hike in\, 1 for lunch/afternoon drinking\, 1 for cooking\, 1 for dinner/overnight drinking\, 2 for the hike out). You can use extra nalgenes or platypus bottles to take your additional water\, or store bought bottled water. \nEQUIPMENT: Everyone attending this trip should be familiar with all the gear needed for the trip. To doublecheck\, you can review the troop backpacking checklist on the Resources page of the troop website to make sure you have all the gear you will need. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 9.3 miles and turn left at the Clear Creek Junction/Ranger Station onto the Angeles Forest Highway. Continue north on the Angeles Forest Highway for approximately 8.3 miles. Turn right at Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road. Travel approximately 9 miles on Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Rd\, then turn left at the Angeles Crest Highway. Drive approximately 10.1 miles on Angeles Crest\, then turn left on Santa Clara Divide Road (3N17). Travel 3.8 miles on 3N17 then bear right onto forest road 5N04. Follow this road 1.1 miles to its end\, just past the junction with the PCT and the road to Sulphur Springs Campground. Park in the small parking lot near the gate – do not block the gate. We will carpool as much as possible – fill your car with scouts and backpacks. Any cars parking overnight will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI\, Big Five) – don’t forget to hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. Note: A portion of the Angeles Crest has been closed due to a landslide – the above directions are an alternate route that will avoid the closed section.

SUMMARY:Tenderfoot Physical Fitness Session #2Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Tenderfoot physical fitness requirement has always been a stumbling block on the way to Tenderfoot. It requires a 30 day interval between part one and part two. Do your best to make this event so we can get this done before Camp Cherry Valley. For those who can’t make session 1\, we will do another session 1 while the first group does session 2 in June. We will then have one more session in July for those who need it. We will meet on Monday May 14 at the Scout House at 6:00\, walk into Lacy Park\, complete the physical requirements (push ups\, sit ups\, stretching and running) and sign the handbooks. We should be done by 6:45.Notes: Please arrive on time.Wear clothes and shoes for running.Do not wear your scout uniform!Bring your Scout Handbook! Thats where we will record your achievements.

SUMMARY:Hiking Merit Badge: 10 Mile Hike #2Inspiration Point - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday June 15 Troop 355 will be offering a 10 Mile Hike to Inspiration Point. This will count as one of the three 10 mile hikes required for the Hiking MB. We will meet at 6:15 a.m. at the top of Lake Street in Altadena (where Lake meets Loma Alta). We should return to the trailhead around 12:30 p.m. – hikers who are being picked up can call a parent on the way down the mountain with a more precise pickup time. \nThis hike will take us up past Echo Mountain – we will hike up the historic (and steep) Castle Canyon trail\, to the site of the famous Inspiration Point lookout. We will descend via the Sam Merrill ridge trail\, and then complete our hike by hiking down the Echo trail back to the trailhead at Top of Lake. We will gain over 2500 feet of elevation on the way to Inspiration Point. \nIf you have only done 5 mile hikes with the troop in the past (like at Kern and CCV)\, please note that a 10 mile hike will be much tougher and more demanding. This is a fairly difficult hike – the first 5 miles is all uphill and the Castle Canyon portion is steep and rugged. If you are in good hiking condition and want to earn the Hiking MB\, or just wish to do a 10 mile hike with the troop\, feel free to join us. \nEvery hiker should bring their 10 essentials. Water (2.5 to 3 liters recommended) and sun protection will be especially important. Bring trail snacks and/or a light lunch. Good hiking boots are strongly recommended. Bring your compass (and map if you have one)\, as we will be working on our navigation skills during the hike. \nHave a great week\, and we hope to see you on Saturday! \nMr. Hollis and Mr. MoffatTroop 355 Hiking MB Counselors

SUMMARY:Kern River Whitewater CampoutClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:The annual Kern River Rafting trip will be held on Memorial Day Weekend. We will arrive at the Sierra South rafting outfitters in Kernville early Saturday morning. We will board buses and ride up the river for a rafting run. We get back on the buses and run the river again. Then we have lunch and work on the whitewater merit badge. After that we travel up the river 30 min. to Camp Whitsett (a BSA camp in the Sequoia National Forest). We make camp and spend the afternoon working on scout skills. That evening we have a formal campfire at which we retire an American flag with an official ceremony. The next morning we go on a five mile hike and work on some more scout skills. We relax and enjoy the afternoon. A campfire that evening concludes the trip and we break camp early on Monday morning and head home. This is the first camping trip with our new scout patrols\, and a great way for them to start off with Troop 355.

SUMMARY:Camp Cherry Valley Signup Period Opens
DESCRIPTION:We will be leading our contingent of scouts to Camp Cherry Valley this summer\, July 21-27. We have booked spaces for 63 scouts for CCV\, but we often sell out our allotment for this popular event. To sign up for CCV and secure a spot\, you will need to deliver a check to the scout house in the amount of $700\, payable to BSA Troop 355 (put the scout’s name in the memo line). We will start collecting checks at 6:00 p.m. on Monday May 13 at the Scout House\, and will be there until 8 p.m. that eventing. To secure a spot we recommend delivering a check on May 14\, or as soon thereafter as possible. The first 63 checks received will get the spots; after that we will start a wait list.

SUMMARY:Tenderfoot Physical Fitness Session #1Click for Details

SUMMARY:West Fork Backpack TripClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:TROOP 355 SPRING BACKPACK TRIPANGELES NATIONAL FORESTWEST FORK TRAIL CAMP \nWHEN: Saturday\, May 4 and Sunday May 5\, 2019. \nWHERE: Red Box Ranger Station to the West Fork Trail Camp along the Gabrielino Trail in the Angeles National Forest. For most of the hike we will be following the west fork of the San Gabriel River. West Fork Trail Camp is located at the junction of two classic trails – the Gabrielino Trail and the Silver Moccasin Trail. \nDIFFICULTY: The hike is 5.3 miles each way. We will hike almost all downhill on Saturday – there is a total elevation loss of about 2000 feet from Red Box to West Fork. On Sunday\, we will hike back up the 2000 vertical feet to Red Box – you will definitely earn those root beers! \nAVAILABILITY: This is an intermediate backpack trip\, but on the advanced side of intermediate. We will take it fairly slow\, but this will be significantly more difficult than our recent Cooper Canyon trip. This trip is not recommended for first time backpackers – instead\, we would recommend that you join us on our introductory backpack trip next fall. \nCOST: $10 per person. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday\, April 22. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the troop meeting\, or mail or deliver to: \nKelly Moffat2280 Adair StreetSan Marino\, CA 91108 \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday. We will divide troop gear and food\, then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 45 minutes. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about midday and be home by 2:00 PM. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for breakfast on Sunday. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced before the trip by email. \nEQUIPMENT: Please review the troop backpacking checklist on the Resources page of the troop website to make sure you have all the gear you will need. The troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment – please contact any of them if you have questions about gear for the trip. \nSPECIAL NOTES: It might be cold (below 40) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nWATER: Everyone should carry 2-3 liters of water for the hike down to West Fork (either in plastic or nalgene bottles or a Camelbak style water bladder). We will be able get additional drinking and cooking water at camp – but it needs to be filtered\, so every tent should have a water filter (you can borrow from another scout or dad if you don’t have a filter). \nDirections to the Red Box Trailhead: There is a large parking lot at the trailhead. However\, it is always a good idea to carpool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 14 miles to the parking lot at Red Box Station. Turn right onto Mount Wilson/Red Box Road\, then immediately right or left into one of the two parking areas on either side of the road – the left (east) parking lot is closest to our trailhead. Any cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store or REI – hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror.
