SUMMARY:West Fork Backpack TripClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:TROOP 355 SPRING BACKPACK TRIPANGELES NATIONAL FORESTWEST FORK TRAIL CAMP \nWHEN: Saturday\, May 4 and Sunday May 5\, 2019. \nWHERE: Red Box Ranger Station to the West Fork Trail Camp along the Gabrielino Trail in the Angeles National Forest. For most of the hike we will be following the west fork of the San Gabriel River. West Fork Trail Camp is located at the junction of two classic trails – the Gabrielino Trail and the Silver Moccasin Trail. \nDIFFICULTY: The hike is 5.3 miles each way. We will hike almost all downhill on Saturday – there is a total elevation loss of about 2000 feet from Red Box to West Fork. On Sunday\, we will hike back up the 2000 vertical feet to Red Box – you will definitely earn those root beers! \nAVAILABILITY: This is an intermediate backpack trip\, but on the advanced side of intermediate. We will take it fairly slow\, but this will be significantly more difficult than our recent Cooper Canyon trip. This trip is not recommended for first time backpackers – instead\, we would recommend that you join us on our introductory backpack trip next fall. \nCOST: $10 per person. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday\, April 22. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the troop meeting\, or mail or deliver to: \nKelly Moffat2280 Adair StreetSan Marino\, CA 91108 \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday. We will divide troop gear and food\, then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 45 minutes. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about midday and be home by 2:00 PM. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for breakfast on Sunday. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced before the trip by email. \nEQUIPMENT: Please review the troop backpacking checklist on the Resources page of the troop website to make sure you have all the gear you will need. The troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment – please contact any of them if you have questions about gear for the trip. \nSPECIAL NOTES: It might be cold (below 40) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nWATER: Everyone should carry 2-3 liters of water for the hike down to West Fork (either in plastic or nalgene bottles or a Camelbak style water bladder). We will be able get additional drinking and cooking water at camp – but it needs to be filtered\, so every tent should have a water filter (you can borrow from another scout or dad if you don’t have a filter). \nDirections to the Red Box Trailhead: There is a large parking lot at the trailhead. However\, it is always a good idea to carpool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 14 miles to the parking lot at Red Box Station. Turn right onto Mount Wilson/Red Box Road\, then immediately right or left into one of the two parking areas on either side of the road – the left (east) parking lot is closest to our trailhead. Any cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store or REI – hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror.

SUMMARY:Hiking Merit Badge: 10 Mile Hike #1Circular Bridge - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Troop 355 will be offering all the hikes required for Hiking Merit Badge. Our first 10 mile hike will be this Saturday\, April 20. We will meet at 6:15 a.m. at the top of Lake Street in Altadena (where Lake meets Loma Alta). We should return to the trailhead around 11:30 a.m. \nThis hike will take us up past Echo Mountain – we will follow the ruins of the Mt. Lowe railway route over Las Flores canyon\, then up to the site of the famous Grand Circular Bridge. We will gain over 2000 feet of elevation. \nIf you have only done 5 mile hikes with the troop in the past (like at Kern and CCV)\, please note that a 10 mile hike will be much tougher and more demanding. But\, this is a fairly moderate hike (our other 10 milers in 2019 will be tougher)\, so if you are in decent hiking condition and want to try a 10 miler\, this would be a good opportunity to do so. \nEvery hiker should bring their 10 essentials. Water (2.5 to 3 liters recommended) and sun protection will be especially important. Bring trail snacks and/or a light lunch. Good hiking boots are strongly recommended. Bring your compass (and map if you have one)\, as we will be working on our navigation skills during the hike. \nThis hike will count as one of the three required 10 mile hikes for Hiking MB. If you would like to earn this badge\, it would be great if you could make the hike. Or if you are not sure about the badge\, but just want to get out and hike this weekend\, feel free to join us. For those interested in earning this MB\, we’ll send out more info regarding the badge requirements soon. In the meantime\, if you want to get on the list of Hiking MB participants\, please email Mr. Moffat or Mr. Hollis. \nHave a great week\, and we hope to see you on Saturday! \nMr. Hollis and Mr. MoffatTroop 355 Hiking MB Counselors

SUMMARY:Blue Angels CampoutClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Imperial Valley Navy League sponsors this truly unique opportunity to watch the Blue Angels – the United States Navy’s flight demonstration squadron – in their final practice sessions before heading out on tour for the air show season. \nWe will arrive late Friday night and camp on the El Centro Naval Air Base. Saturday morning we will eat breakfast on the tarmac and watch the show. Following the show\, we will race go carts on the base and return for the second show. This is a great chance to see the show in front of a very small crowd (around 200 people). Most years we are given the opportunity to meet the pilots after the second show. Very fun! \nPlease note that there is a possibilty that the date of this trip could change due to adjustments in the Blue Angels’ schedule.
