DESCRIPTION:The Tenderfoot physical fitness requirement has always been a stumbling block on the way to Tenderfoot. It requires a 30 day interval between part one and part two. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday July 7\, Troop 355 will be offering a 10 Mile Hike on the Mt. Wilson Trail.  This will count as one of the three 10 mile hikes required for the Hiking Merit Badge.   \nWe will meet at 6:00 am sharp and plan to start the hike no later than 6:15 am.  We wil meet at the Richardson House/ Lizzie’s Trail Inn (a historic place) on the corner of Mira Monte and Mt. Wilson Trail in Sierra Madre.  You can park in the neighborhood around that area.  No Forest Pass is required.  We should return to the trail head around 12:30 p.m. — hikers who are being picked up can call a parent on the way down the mountain with a more precise pickup time. \nThis hike takes us on the Mt. Wilson trail\, along Little Santa Anita Canyon.  We’ll head up the canyon and past the historic Orchard Camp\, and continue upwards until we arrive at Manzanita Ridge.  We won’t go all the way to Mt. Wilson–Mr. Moffat is planning a different trip there\, probably in the fall.  After a brief rest at Manzanita Ridge\,  we’ll return to the trail head to complete the 10 mile round trip.  The elevation gain on the first 5 miles is about 3500 feet\, so it’s great training for Philmont too! \nThis trail is steeped in history.  Benjamin Don Benito” Wilson built this trail in 1864 (!) in order to obtain timber. Later\, in 1889\, this trail was used to bring the individual pieces of the world-famous Harvard telescope up to the top of Mt. Wilson.  Half-way up the trail to Mt. Wilson are the remains of Orchard Camp\, which was very popular recreational site in the foothills for about 40 years\, hosting over 40\,000 trail camp visitors in 1911.  In the midst of Orchard Camp is one of the oldest living California oaks\, thought to be around 1500 years old!  As we hike up this trail\, it’s amazing to think what our local predecessors accomplished in these foothills. \nRemember\, if you have only done 5 mile hikes with the troop in the past (like at Kern and CCV)\, please note that a 10 mile hike is much  more demanding.  This is a fairly difficult hike – the first 5 miles are all uphill and there are exposed areas and plenty of poison oak to boot.  If you are in good hiking condition and want to earn the Hiking MB\, or just wish to do a 10 mile hike with the troop\, feel free to join us.  \nEvery hiker should bring their 10 essentials.  Water (2.5 to 3 liters recommended) and sun protection will be especially important.  Bring trail snacks  — we’ll probably stop for a bit to rest and eat at Orchard Camp\, as well as Manzanita Ridge.  Good hiking boots are strongly recommended. We will then be assigned our banners\, and the parade will begin about 5:00 p.m. We will march down Monterey Road to Virginia Road\, then enter Lacy Park where the parade will end. DESCRIPTION:Troop 355 is lucky to once again have Mr. Correnti as our Salesmanship Merit Badge counselor.  This badge will be taught in two sessions. Scouts must attend both sessions to earn the badge. First will be a classroom session on Monday July 1\, 630-8 p.m. at the Scout House. No uniform is required for the class. The second session is a field experience to sell red\, white and blue glowsticks at Lacy Park on July 4. The glowstick sales will be after the parade and before the fireworks – from about 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Class A uniforms are required. No sash please. We will meet right after the parade at the flag poles on the east side of Lacy Park. Then we will start selling those glowsticks – and we will see who can sell the most.

SUMMARY:Mt. Pacifico Advanced Backpack Trip and Philmont ShakedownClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30\, 2019 \nWHERE: Sulphur Springs/Pinyon Flats to the peak of Mt. Pacifico in the Angeles National Forest. We will hike mostly on the classic Pacific Crest Trail\, then hike cross country up the summit ridge to the peak. The Mt. Pacifico Trail Camp is right on the summit.  In 2018 we hiked to Mt. Pacifico from the Angeles Forest Highway and Mill Creek\, and hiked east on the PCT.  This year we will access Mt. Pacifico from the Angeles Crest Highway\, and hike west on the PCT. \nDIFFICULTY/AVAILABILITY: This hike is about 6 miles each way\, with an elevation gain of about 2200 feet. There is no water at camp. The dry camp factor will push the trip from a high intermediate to an advanced trip. This trip is primarily intended as a shakedown for our 2019 Philmont crews. Other advanced Troop 355 backpackers are also invited to attend. If you have not completed multiple backpack trips with Troop 355\, we would ask that you wait until our fall backpack trip and join us on that one.  \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, June 24. You can drop off or mail a check made out to BSA Troop 355 to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair Street\, San Marino\, CA 91108. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday\, June 29. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1.5 hours. We should return to the trailhead Sunday morning by noon.  \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for Sunday’s breakfast. Pacifico is at 7100 feet\, so it might be cold at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Everyone will need to pack in all the water he will need for the whole trip\, including a portion of the cooking water. Drive approximately 9.3 miles and turn left at the Clear Creek Junction/Ranger Station onto the Angeles Forest Highway.  Continue north on the Angeles Forest Highway for approximately 8.3 miles.  Turn right at Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road.  Travel approximately 9 miles on Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Rd\, then turn left at the Angeles Crest Highway.  Drive approximately 10.1 miles on Angeles Crest\, then turn left on Santa Clara Divide Road (3N17).  Travel 3.8 miles on 3N17 then bear right onto forest road 5N04.  Follow this road 1.1 miles to its end\, just past the junction with the PCT and the road to Sulphur Springs Campground.  Park in the small parking lot near the gate – do not block the gate.  We will carpool as much as possible – fill your car with scouts and backpacks. Any cars parking overnight will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI\, Big Five) – don’t forget to hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror.  Note:  A portion of the Angeles Crest has been closed due to a landslide – the above directions are an alternate route that will avoid the closed section.

SUMMARY:Mt. Pacifico Advanced Backpack Trip and Philmont ShakedownClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30\, 2019 \nWHERE: Sulphur Springs/Pinyon Flats to the peak of Mt. Pacifico in the Angeles National Forest. We will hike mostly on the classic Pacific Crest Trail\, then hike cross country up the summit ridge to the peak. The Mt. Pacifico Trail Camp is right on the summit.  In 2018 we hiked to Mt. Pacifico from the Angeles Forest Highway and Mill Creek\, and hiked east on the PCT.  This year we will access Mt. Pacifico from the Angeles Crest Highway\, and hike west on the PCT. \nDIFFICULTY/AVAILABILITY: This hike is about 6 miles each way\, with an elevation gain of about 2200 feet. There is no water at camp. The dry camp factor will push the trip from a high intermediate to an advanced trip. This trip is primarily intended as a shakedown for our 2019 Philmont crews. Other advanced Troop 355 backpackers are also invited to attend. If you have not completed multiple backpack trips with Troop 355\, we would ask that you wait until our fall backpack trip and join us on that one.  \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, June 24. You can drop off or mail a check made out to BSA Troop 355 to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair Street\, San Marino\, CA 91108. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday\, June 29. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1.5 hours. We should return to the trailhead Sunday morning by noon.  \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for Sunday’s breakfast.
