SUMMARY:5 Mile Hike: POSTPONED!Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE POSTPONING THIS HIKE DUE TO WEATHER CONCERNS. WE WILL DO AN ECHO HIKE AGAIN SOON – PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON THE CALENDAR AND THE TROOP EMAILS. \nCome on out and hike with the troop on Super Bowl Sunday – we will be hiking up Echo Mountain. This is the classic Troop 355 training hike – the trail rises over 1300 feet on its way to the Echo Mountain ruins. The total hike distance is 5.2 miles round trip. This will be a great way to get some activity in before you sit on the couch all afternoon. This hike will also be a great start to our hiking season and our many activities – you can get in a warm up hike before the West Fork Backpack Trip\, kick off your Hiking MB hikes\, start off the Philmont Training\, or just come out to hike and have a great time. This hike will also satisfy the Second Class five mile hike requirement\, so if you have not had the chance to get this signoff yet\, this would be a great opportunity to do so. We will orient our maps and use them to navigate on this hike. And we will spend a bit of time at the top exploring the hotel and railway ruins. \nWe will meet at 6:15 a.m. sharp\, at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena\, where Lake meets Loma Alta – meet by the stone gate on the northeast side of the intersection. The early morning is the best time to do this hike – this trail gets extremely crowded on weekends\, and also can be very hot\, so by going early we can avoid these problems and still have most of our day left after the hike. We should return to the trailhead between 9:30 and 10 a.m. \nBring a daypack with your 10 essentials (most importantly 1 to 2 liters of water)\, plus your Scout Handbook if you wish to obtain any signoffs. Note that it will still be a bit dark when you arrive\, but it will be light enough to see by the time we start hiking – you will not need a headlamp. It will likely be cold when we are gathering before the hike\, so bring an extra layer\, but you will warm up quickly after we start hiking.

SUMMARY:Indian Cove Rock ClimbingClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:JOIN TROOP 355 AT JOSHUA TREEWHEN: Friday November 16th to Sunday November 18thWHERE: Indian Cove Campground\, Group Sites 9-12 Joshua Tree National Park. See directions below. The site we have reserved can accommodate 75 people and 25 cars\, so we need to carpool. \nCLIMBING: We will offer three climbing options.1. Rock Climbing Merit Badge (full day\, starts at 7:45 am). 2. Half day climbing (more advanced climbing for Dads and Scouts who already have the Climbing merit badge\, starts at 7:45 am).3. Camping only\, no climbing \nWe will arrive in camp Friday night. Climbing will start at 7:45 am Saturday morning. The climbing will be fully supervised by Joshua Tree Guides. JTG are registered BSA Climbing Merit Badge Counselors and Certified Rock Climbing Guides. Guide to climber ratio is 5:1. The Guides are certified by one or more of the following Professional Climbing Guides Institute-www.climbingguidesinstitute.org-www.amga.com \nNOT INCLUDED:-Meals Planned by patrols(Saturday breakfast\, lunch\, dinner and Sunday breakfast)-Friday dinner on the road \nWhy in the world would we camp two nights?Several reasons: 1. Climbing starts at 7:00 am. 2. You need 21 nights of camping to get Eagle. 3. First class cooking signoff is much easier to do on a two nighter. Our next two nighter is Kern River in May. \nEQUIPMENT: Bring standard camp gear for car camping. The rock climbing school provides all climbing gear. Bring warm clothes. Weather ranges from 70 degrees in the day to 35 degrees at night. We will camp at 3200’\, and it can be cold and windy at night. Shorts are not recommended for climbing. \nDIRECTIONS:•	Take I-10 East to Route 62. The exit is marked Morongo Valley and Yucca Valley.•	Continue on Route 62 for approximately 28 miles to Joshua Tree.•	Continue east through the city of Joshua Tree for about 12 miles. •	Make a right turn (south) on Indian Cove Road. Drive about 1 mile to the Park entrance. Then you continue on 2 miles and turn right into the group campsite area. We are in group campsite 1•	There is usually decent cell-phone coverage in camp•	The number for the NPS Ranger at Indian Cove is 760-362-4367. \nFAQ’s \nQ: Can we drive in Saturday morning?A: Yes\, but you have to be there by 7:45 for the climbing \nQ: My son has a game\, can he come in late/early and still get the badge? A: No\, the badge takes all day\, including a classroom session around 4:00 pm. \nQ: What sort of climbing is required to get the badge?A: The Scouts needs to climb three different routes and repell three different routes. They also need to belay (with a guide back-up) three climbers on their routes. The routes are appropriate for beginners yet challenging for most of our Scouts. They have a safety line on at all times with little to no slack. \nQ: Can Dads climb?A: Yes\, dads can climb in the half day option. Priority for the limited spaces will go to the Scouts. If a Dad signs up for the half day and get bumped out by a Scout\, his check will be returned. Normally we have space for Dads! \nQ: My son doesn’t have the merit badge\, can he just climb the half day?A: No
