SUMMARY:Cycling Merit Badge 50 Mile Ride
DESCRIPTION:Hello Troop 355\, \nAs we wind down to our last few rides this season\, I wanted to send out details about the upcoming 50 mile organized bike tour to complete the road biking requirement. More details will follow\, but we have selected Sunday\, Nov 27 since planning such a long ride takes some coordination and there are a few families who have offered to help provide support along the route. \nThe “round trip” course begins at Zuma/ Malibu to Pt. Hueneme in Ventura County and back. All cyclists are welcome to join the troop on our longest and merit badge required ride of this cycling season. \nWe will ride along Pacific Coast Hwy from the designated location at 7:30 a.m. sharp. Free parking along PCH. We should finish around 12:30 returning to the same location. This ride meets the 50 mile required ride for the merit badge\, and for those scouts who have earned the merit badge in the past\, this can be a great way to earn the National Outdoor Award Riding Badge requiring a minimum of 200 miles of riding. (There are additional silver pins for each 100 miles thereafter and a gold pin for a combined 400 miles.) \nPlease reach out to me if you have any questions. My cell/ text number is (626) 695-2239. Richard Janisch \nDrop Off & Pick Up: Aloha Beach Camp\, 30100 Pacific Coast Highway\, Malibu\, CA 90265

SUMMARY:Signoff Day at the Scout House!
DESCRIPTION:All scouts needing signoffs for any rank are encouraged to come by the Scout House for this event – just come by anytime between 10 and 4 and work on signoffs with our senior scouts. We can do any signoffs except those that are specifically required to be done on a campout (sleep in a tent that you pitched\, etc.). \nWe recommend that you review the signoffs you wish to receive before the event\, and bring your scout skill items. \nSenior Scouts\, we really need your help with this – we will be having three shifts for this event. 10 a.m. to noon\, noon to 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please consider coming by for a shift to help out our younger scouts.

SUMMARY:Navigation/Orienteering Signoffs at Lacy Park - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:Our scout leaders will be offering the required navigation/orienteering signoffs to our scouts this Sunday\, November 13\, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Lacy Park. We will meet at the flagpoles near the Virginia entrance; note that the Scout House entrance to Lacy Park is usually closed on weekends. \nThese signoffs are often difficult for our scouts to obtain – so this is a great chance to get them. Come on out Sunday to join our SPL and ASPLs to tackle the famous Troop 355 Orienteering Course. See which of you has the right stuff to successfully navigate the course and identify all the correct trees! We will also discuss finding directions without using a compass\, and measuring the height and width of designated items like trees and streams. In addition\, we will cover the GPS requirements that are in the new version of the handbook\, so please bring a smartphone with Googlemaps installed if you are able (if you are unable to do this you can team up with a buddy). \nBy completing these navigation and orienteering requirements\, scouts will be able to complete First Class Signoffs 1 and 2 (old version of the handbook) or First Class Signoffs 4a and 4b\, plus Second Class Signoff 3d (new handbook). \nPlease bring your compass\, your Scout Handbook and a pen or pencil (in addition to the phone with Googlemaps). We would also recommend a daypack with water and a jacket. \nIf you would like to obtain these signoffs and have a conflict on Sunday afternoon\, please let Mr. Moffat know – if there is interest we will do our best to offer a makeup opportunity to obtain these signoffs before the December BOR deadline.

Climbing starts at 7:00 am. 2. You need 21 nights of camping to get Eagle. 3. First class cooking signoff is much easier to do on a two nighter. Our next two nighter is Kern River in May. \nEQUIPMENT: Bring standard camp gear for car camping. The rock climbing school provides all climbing gear. Bring warm clothes. Weather ranges from 70 degrees in the day to 35 degrees at night. We will camp at 3200’\, and it can be cold and windy at night. Drive about 1 mile to the Park entrance. Then you continue on 2 miles and turn right into the group campsite area. We are in group campsite 1•	There is usually decent cell-phone coverage in camp•	The number for the NPS Ranger at Indian Cove is 760-362-4367. \nFAQ’s \nQ: Can we drive in Saturday morning?A: Yes\, but you have to be there by 7:45 for the climbing \nQ: My son has a game\, can he come in late/early and still get the badge? A: No\, the badge takes all day\, including a classroom session around 4:00 pm. \nQ: What sort of climbing is required to get the badge?A: The Scouts needs to climb three different routes and repell three different routes. They also need to belay (with a guide back-up) three climbers on their routes. The routes are appropriate for beginners yet challenging for most of our Scouts. They have a safety line on at all times with little to no slack. \nQ: Can Dads climb?A: Yes\, dads can climb in the half day option. Priority for the limited spaces will go to the Scouts. If a Dad signs up for the half day and get bumped out by a Scout\, his check will be returned. Normally we have space for Dads! \nQ: My son doesn’t have the merit badge\, can he just climb the half day?A: No
