SUMMARY:Mt Whitney Hike and Campout
DESCRIPTION:The troop has secured a very limited number of permits to attempt a one-day summit of Mt. Whitney – the highest mountain in the lower 48 states\, at 14\,495 feet above sea level. This is an exceptionally challenging hike – 22 miles and over 6\,000 feet of elevation gain. We will camp near the trailhead on Saturday night\, then make the summit attempt on Sunday. We will either camp or stay in Lone Pine on Sunday night\, then return home on Monday. \nAs safety will be our first priority\, this hike will be limited to our most active and experienced hikers. We anticipate that hikers will need to have completed a Philmont trek with the troop in order to get on the roster for this trip. If you are interested\, please contact Mr. Dawes to be placed on an interest list. We will fill the roster starting with our most experienced hikers. But current hiking will also be essential; anyone planning to make this hike should also attend our advanced troop hikes in August and early September. \nWe plan to offer this hike again in future years\, so our younger scouts who become involved in our hiking program will also have the opportunity to climb Mt. Whitney with 355.

SUMMARY:Introductory Backpack Trip to Cooper Canyon - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Troop 355 fall backpacking trip is traditionally a short and easy outing – the main goal is to introduce our new backpackers to this great activity. We feel our backpacking program is one of our troop’s great strengths\, and we hope that many of you will get to experience the challenges and rewards of backpacking with the trooop\, and eventually become part of our experienced Philmont crews. These trips are also lots of fun for our experienced backpackers; we generally offer an additional hiking option for those who want to hike a few more miles. \nThis fall we will be jumping right into our backpack program – with our introductory backpack trip on the first weekend of our scouting year! \nWHEN: Saturday\, September 17 and Sunday\, September 18. \nWHERE: Buckhorn Campground to the Cooper Canyon Trail Camp along the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails in the Angeles National Forest. Rated as one of the best Trails in the Angeles. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 2.7 miles each way on the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails. It is as flat a hike as you are going to get in the Angeles National Forest with a net loss of 250 feet in elevation on the hike to camp. This is an easy hike\, perfect for first time backpackers. If you can carry a duffle bag\, you can do this trip. We will offer an additional hiking option to our advanced hikers – after we reach the trailhead on Sunday a group will continue hiking to the summit of nearby Mt. Waterman (an additional 8 miles and 1500 feet of elevation). \nAVAILABILITY: This is an introductory backpack. Everyone is welcome. If you have ever had an interest in backpacking\, this is the opportunity to try it! Dr. Snaer will host a backpacking seminar on Monday\, August 29 at 7:30 PM at the Scout House. Come learn what to pack (and what not to pack). \nCOST: $25 per hiker. You can sign up for the trip at the August 29 backpacking seminar. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, September 12 (the first troop meeting). Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday\, September 17. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1 ½ hours. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about noon and be home by 2:00 PM. \nWATER: IMPORTANT: There is currently no water available at camp. Every hiker should carry enough water on the hike on Saturday for drinking on the hike and for the remainder of Saturday (approximately 3.5-4 liters per hiker). A group of senior scouts and dads will hike to Cloudburst Summit on Saturday afternoon and bring down additional water for Saturday’s dinner cooking\, and everyone will get 2 liters of water to use on the hike out Sunday. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, fruit or nuts breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Thursday night\, September 15 by email. Because of the water situation\, you should not bring any lunch or breakfast food that requires additional water (hot chocolate\, oatmeal\, etc.). \nSPECIAL NOTES:It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. Our troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment. Please contact them if you have any questions.Any cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI) or at the gas station just south of the Angeles Crest exit from the 210. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Parking is limited at the trailhead so please car pool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to Highway 2 north (Angeles Crest Hwy.). Drive approximately 34.7 miles to the Buckhorn Campground sign and take a sharp left into the campground. This can be a tricky turn to see\, so watch for the following landmarks as you get close – large Cloudburst Summit sign at 33.4 miles\, Buckhorn Day Use Area sign at 34.5 miles (do not turn here)\, then a sign saying Buckhorn CG Entrance 500 feet. After you turn left into the campground\, drive 0.4 miles and veer right at the junction. After 0.1 more miles there will be a sign pointing left that says Day Use Trail Area. Follow that to the left and you will see a sign saying Burkhart Trail. Follow the Burkhart Trail signs until the road ends at the trailhead parking lot. Hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. Depending on the number of cars in the parking lot\, we may need to park some cars outside of the Campground along the Angeles Crest Hwy.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Troop 355\, \nMy name is Tom Moffat. I am a Life Scout and the current Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 355. I will be doing my Eagle Project at the Huntington Botanical Gardens on Saturday September 3rd and Sunday September 4th\, which is Labor Day weekend. For my project\, I will be installing a drip irrigation system on an area of land at the Huntington. \nDescription: We will be installing a drip irrigation system on approximately 6\,125 square feet of land at the Huntington Botanical Gardens. Drip irrigation is becoming more popular because it uses about 70% less water than regular sprinklers. Installing a drip irrigation system would greatly benefit the Huntington and help reduce its water usage. \nWhere: Huntington Botanical Gardens\, San Marino\, CA 1151 Oxford Rd\, San Marino\, CA 91108When: Saturday September 3rd\, 2016 from 9:00am to 4:00pm Sunday September 4th\, 2016 from 9:00am to 4:00pm \nI plan on having two shifts each day. A morning shift form 9-12:30 and an afternoon shift from 12:30-4. For those of you that plan on coming\, please send me an email telling me that you plan on coming and during which shift. That will help me get an estimate on the number of scouts attending. Lunch\, snacks\, and bottled water will be provided for both groups. \nI will send out another email the week of the project with detailed instructions about the project and directions. \nTom MoffatSPL Troop 355

SUMMARY:Advanced Hike: Mt. Baden-PowellClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday August 27\, Troop 355 will be summiting Mt. Baden-Powell. This is a classic hike; the trail up Baden-Powell is known to be one of the best trails ever constructed in Southern California – 41 evenly spaced switchbacks going up 2800 feet\, to the summit at 9400 feet. On the summit ridge we will pass spectacular 1000 year old limber pines\, and on the summit is the famous Boy Scout monument. From the top are views of the entire San Gabriel range\, plus there is a good chance of seeing gliders from Crystalaire Airport flying above. The hike is 8 miles roundtrip – we will have the option of making it a 10 mile hike by hiking an additional 2.2 miles roundtrip to the nearby summit of Mt. Burnham. \nWe will meet at the Scout House at 6 a.m. sharp on Saturday morning and divide into carpools. If you would rather drive straight to the trailhead that is also fine\, just let Mr. Moffat know so we will know to look out for you at the trailhead. The drive to the trailhead is about 1.5 hours\, so we should get to the trailhead around 7:30 and gear up and start hiking shortly thereafter. Bring your 10 essentials and plenty of water. Please also bring some cash as we may stop for lunch on the way home. \nDirections to the Vincent Gap/Mt Baden Powell trailhead: \nFrom 210E freeway merge on to I-15N.Go approximately 15 miles on I-15N to the Highway 138 exit.Turn left onto Highway 138.Go almost 9 miles to Highway 2\, Angeles Crest Highway.Turn left onto Angeles Crest Highway and go almost 14 miles to the trailhead. It is recommended that you place an Adventure Pass on your mirror when parking at the trailhead.
