This is a classic hike; the trail up Baden-Powell is known to be one of the best trails ever constructed in Southern California – 41 evenly spaced switchbacks going up 2800 feet\, to the summit at 9400 feet. On the summit ridge we will pass spectacular 1000 year old limber pines\, and on the summit is the famous Boy Scout monument. From the top are views of the entire San Gabriel range\, plus there is a good chance of seeing gliders from Crystalaire Airport flying above. The hike is 8 miles roundtrip – we will have the option of making it a 10 mile hike by hiking an additional 2.2 miles roundtrip to the nearby summit of Mt. Burnham. \nWe will meet at the Scout House at 6 a.m. sharp on Saturday morning and divide into carpools. If you would rather drive straight to the trailhead that is also fine\, just let Mr. Moffat know so we will know to look out for you at the trailhead. The drive to the trailhead is about 1.5 hours\, so we should get to the trailhead around 7:30 and gear up and start hiking shortly thereafter. Bring your 10 essentials and plenty of water. I will be a senior at St. Francis High School and I am a current Life Scout in Troop 355. \nMy Eagle Project will take place at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada. We will be refurbishing 300 feet of a railing and planting a drought-tolerant garden. This is a popular hangout spot during breaks at school\, and it will be important to refurbish the railing to get rid of the rust\, and make the area look nicer. \nOn July 23rd\, we will focus on the refurbishing of the railing. We will be sanding off the old paint and rust\, and repainting the 300 feet of railing. Depending on the amount of people in attendance\, we may also begin working on the garden. \nOn July 24th\, we will focus on the drought-tolerant garden. Right now\, it is a plain stretch of hard dirt. We will begin by turning the soil and putting fertilizer in it to soften it. When the soil is ready\, we will be planting drought-tolerant (and deer-tolerant) plants. When all plants are planted\, we will finish off the garden by placing a layer of mulch. The garden will complement the railing as we liven up the entire area! \nDates and Times: July 23-July 24\, 9:00am – 5:00pm both days \nLocation: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy\, 440 St. Katherine Drive\, La Canada\, CA 91011 \nParking: There is a parking lot across the street from the project. It will be on the right side of the road as you begin to approach the school \nFood: Lunch\, drinks\, and snacks will be provided \nSunscreen will also be provided. We will also have a few easy-ups for shade. \nClothing: We will be sanding\, painting\, and planting\, so I suggest comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting a little bit dirty.
